How do you find a qualified plastic surgeon? Most people are not aware that anyone with a medical degree can call himself or herself a plastic or cosmetic surgeon, advertise those services and perform them. Your first consideration should be to develop a list of well-qualified plastic surgeons. Recommendations from friends or your family physician are a good starting point. Local hospitals can provide you with a list of board certified plastic surgeons with approval to perform the procedures you are considering. Board certification cannot guarantee great results, but it can certainly increase the odds. The next step is to investigate your physician's credentials, such as board certification. If a physician indicates that he is board certified, make sure you question to which board he is referring. The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify plastic surgeons. A surgeon who is ABPS certified has graduated from an accredited medical school and completed at least five years of additional residency. After this, the surgeon must practice plastic surgery for two years and pass comprehensive written and oral exams. You can verify this information through www.certifieddoctor.org.

After you have narrowed your list of candidates, consider asking these questions during the initial consultation: Do you do this procedure frequently or only occasionally and when did you last perform this procedure? What major hospitals and surgery centers are you affiliated with in the area? Could the surgeon show you various before and after photos of his other patients who had undergone the procedure you are considering? Did he candidly discuss the potential risks and complications associated with this procedure so you could make an informed choice? After your consultation, think about this: Did the surgeon ask about your motivation or appearance goals? Were all your questions answered to your satisfaction? Did the surgeon welcome questions about professional qualifications, experience and cost? Did you feel comfortable talking with the surgeon about surgical and non-surgical alternatives?

Breast Enlargement

Women with small or underdeveloped breasts who wish to enhance their appearance may choose to have a procedure called breast augmentation mammoplasty. A fuller body contour can be safely achieved through the placement of implants directly under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. Implants that are filled with saline or salt-water are now being used for breast augmentation procedures. At The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery, the surgeon selects a saline implant correct for your body size and lifestyle. Women have reported a high degree of satisfaction with these implants. Small incisions are made so that the implant can be inserted. These small incisions may be made in the crease under the breast or under the nipple. The implant is then filled with saline to achieve the desired size and shape of the breast. The surgery can be performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia and takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete.

Liposuction

Fat in the hips, waist, and thighs can be one of the most difficult problems to solve, since these areas often to not respond well to diet and exercise. Fat in the females hip and thigh areas has a high level of fat-storing enzymes, enabling her to store fat during pregnancy. Fortunately, liposuction procedures are available to remove unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. A small incision is made in the skin just large enough to accommodate a small hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula suctions the fat from selected areas of the body to create the desired contour. While some patients undergo major liposuction to remove 10-25 lbs. of excess fat, most patients prefer to remove small amounts of fat from specific areas. The buttocks can also be reshaped using liposuction techniques. Although conservative reduction can take place, removal of too much fat results in more sagging, making the buttocks look worse than before surgery. In order to prevent this sagging, a contouring procedure has been developed which involves stabilizing and reducing the size of the buttocks.

Facelift

At The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery our physicians are specialists in facial rejuvenation and are experienced in the latest surgical and non-surgical techniques. The four components that are evaluated for facial rejuvenation are: skin, fat, muscle and bone. A face lift, or Rhytidectomy, is a procedure for reversing the signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles and reshaping the skin of your face and neck. Incisions for a facelift usually begin hidden above the hairline at the temples, and extend in a natural line around the ear to the lower scalp. After removing excess fat and skin, and tightening the underlying muscles, the incisions are sutured. Your surgeon may suggest other procedures to maximize your appearance goals, such as laser resurfacing for fine wrinkles, fat injections, nose reshaping, or facial implants.
